The Devon & Cornwall Area provided the two National Champion riders. Richard Woollacott, from Rose Ash near South Molton, clinched his first Men's National Championship with 40 winners. Ottery St Mary jockey Polly Gundry rode 16 winners to secure her eighth National Ladies’ title.
The Wessex Area got on the national scoresheet with the Devon & Somerset-qualified Fully Loaded, who won nine races to take the Leading Horse Award. Trained by Gerald Greenway for his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Andrew Pugsley, Fully Loaded proved the ideal schoolmaster for their daughters Emma and Lucy, who shared the rides throughout the season. Emma won three races on the 10-year-old, while Lucy's six successes were enough to land the Princess Royal Trophy (for the leading U21 lady rider) and gave her second place in the National Lady Novice riders’ table.
The Wessex Pony Finals, run at Umberleigh as the final Wessex Area meeting at Larkhill was lost due to hard ground, were won by Megan Nicholls aboard Angelic (138cm) and Bryony Frost on Billie Jean (148cm).
The Wessex Area Awards will be presented at the Annual Dinner & Dance at Haselbury Mill, nr Crewkerne, Somerset on Friday 24 September 2010. Further information and tickets from 01460 74943 (email:sarah@peckmoor.com).
