Golden Ray's help Wincanton celebrate their 2009-10 season!

THURSDAY evening, (May 6th) saw Wincanton Racecourse host its final fixture of the 2009 / 2010 season - the hugely popular meeting competed against the national election and successfully attracted nearly 3,000 racegoers, who were treated to an Ultimate Madness musical after racing.

On the night, Local trainer – COLIN TIZZARD – was crowned Wincanton’s champion trainer for the season and took home £2,000 via the random prize draw, kindly supported by Bathwick Tyres. Trainer, DAVID PIPE, luckily scooped the championship £8,000 jackpot, with Venetia Williams winning £1,000. Robert and Sally Alner were awarded an all expenses hospitality box for 12 on a raceday of their choice. The Jason Dufosee Trophy was presented to RICHARD JOHNSON, track’s most winning jockey, with eight victories and eleven placings this season, predominately for local leading trainer, Philip Hobbs. Wincanton Racecourse has experienced a rather unorthodox season with the harsh winter stripping the Somerset track of their three principal meetings: Jan 9th – Higos Insurance Day, Feb 20th - Kingwell Hurdle and April 1st. Nevertheless, the remaining 14 fixtures all went to post, with the April and May encounters (Countryside, Ladies Days & Music Night) being granted glorious weather and successfully pull in the punters – beating previous attendance and advance booking records. Furthermore, Wincanton Racecourse has handsomely been rewarded it’s fourth consequent ROA Gold Standard Award. Steven Clarke, Managing Director of Wincanton Racecourse, explains: “It’s an honour to receive the ROA Gold Standard Award – it really is the icing on the cake given our interesting season! We have had a strong 2009 / 2010 racing season and we look forward to developing new initiatives and campaigns for the next period, whilst endeavouring to secure a fifth Gold Standard Award. Clarke added: “I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all jump trainers and owners for their continued support, along with our loyal racegoers. Over the summer, Wincanton Racecourse will undertake a £150,000 refurbishment with the Badger Bar, situated in the Grandstand enclosure, receiving significant attention. A new lounge is to be installed next to the Stalbridge Bar alongside further technological improvements throughout all hospitality areas. The re-styled Wincanton Racecourse will be unveiled in the Autumn, however the conference and banqueting facilities will remain open over the Summer.
