Tom steps down as chairman of Taunton Town

TOM Harris, chairman of Zamaretto League club Taunton Town for the past 29 years, has stepped down.

Mr Harris, who is 82, said last night: "I felt it was time for a younger man to take over." The highlight of his chairmanship was the winning of the FA Carlsberg Vase at Villa Park in 2001. Town's manager Paul West captained the side. The new chairman is former Taunton cricket club captain Kevin Sturmey who is a director and was elected by the board following the club's annual meeting. Mr Sturmey said the board had not ruled out the possibility of selling its ground at Wordsworth Drive but in the current climate the club would be looking to improve its present facilities. "We have a lot of work to do at the club. "Tom has left the club in a healthy, financial state and we thank him for all that he has done. "He will remain involved with the club on a daily basis." Taunton made a working loss of £7,000 during the past year, compared to a £15,000 profit for the previous 12 months. The club's company secretary John Eastment, who lives in Wales, has also resigned.
